On July 29, more than 20 employees from EisnerAmper’s New York City and Syosset offices loaded up on the sunscreen and camp attire and participated in the EisnerAmper Cares volunteer event at Sunrise Day Camp in Wheatley Heights, Long Island. Sunrise Day Camp is the only dedicated full summer day camp in the nation for children with cancer ages 3 ½ - 16 and their siblings. It is a very special place where children can attend free of charge and enjoy a summer filled with fun, friendship and activities – things often denied them because of their medical condition.

Sunrise Day Camp considers the impact cancer has on an entire family. When a single family member has cancer the entire family is impacted, not only physically and emotionally, but financially as well. Sunrise also acknowledges the importance of including siblings in the camp program. Many times the siblings are unable to attend their regular summer activities, sports or summer camps because doctors’ appointments for their sick brother or sister take priority. The Camp gives all of the children (healthy and sick) a place to call home for the summer; a place where they could just be themselves rather than the ‘kid who has cancer.’

The theme of the day was Wild and Wacky Week Game Show!  EisnerAmper sponsored an organization called mainstages which brought an interactive game show to the campers. Campers were split into two groups based on ages and participated in rapid fire questions using real buzzers. Equipped with lights and sound effects, mainstages brought smiles to the faces of all of the campers and counselors. EisnerAmper volunteers were also smiling as they were brought into physical challenges like catching a rubber chicken or charades. Following the game show activity, EisnerAmper volunteers handed out ice cream bars to the campers and gathered with them for their daily camp round up where chanting singing and cheering takes place to close out each camp day.

This is the second year EisnerAmper’s Long Island office has volunteered at Sunrise and we all agree there are no better feelings than making children happy and giving back to the community.

For seven years, EisnerAmper Cares has offered our employees the chance to leave the office for a day and do something to better the world and make a difference in the community.  Employees organize and direct each activity, work together as a team, and fulfill the EisnerAmper Cares mission of giving back.
