Recently, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued a reminder that April 17, 2018 is the due date this year for filing FinCEN Form 114, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) to report foreign financial accounts held in 2017.
Filers failing to meet the FBAR due date will be granted an automatic extension to October 15; specific requests for filing this extension are not required.
The FBAR filing deadline follows the federal income tax due date guidance. When the federal income tax due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the due date is delayed until the next business day. In 2018, April 15 falls on a Sunday. Monday April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia; under the tax law, legal holidays in the District of Columbia impact the filing deadline throughout the U.S.
