It appears that 2018 is poised to present favorable investment opportunities across various geographies, markets, industries and sectors. At the 3rd annual Columbia Business School Alumni Club of New York’s (CBSACNY) Investing Outlook Event--2018 and Beyond, hosted by EisnerAmper and headed by Andrew Halperin, a partner in the firm’s financial services group, a trio of industry veteran panelists shared some of their views.
Here are a handful of things they mentioned:

  • When looking at the world as a whole and across asset classes, the consensus was mixed on whether U.S. markets or non-U.S. markets will present more attractive investment opportunities.
  • On a sector level, health care is one of the most favored, particularly for related real estate, infrastructure and technology. Additionally, the technology, media, and telecommunications sector should do well.
  • While there may be selective opportunities in credit, including in collateralized loan obligations, valuations appear high as spreads have tightened.
  • Geopolitical risk does not appear to be at the forefront of investors’ minds.
  • Quants, artificial intelligence and big data will be key staples at hedge fund managers.
  • Finally, the biggest “stories” anticipated for 2018 include the potential negative impact if inflation picks up and the Fed raises interest rates rise too fast.

EisnerAmper would like to thank the speakers for their time and insights:

  • Lionel Erdely, Head and Chief Investment Officer, Alternative Investment Solutions, Investcorp
  • Chris Acito, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer, Gapstow
  • Alex Darden, Partner, Head of the New York City office, and Partner in the Infrastructure Fund, EQT Partners
