John Newkirk

John A. Newkirk is a Director in the firm’s Real Estate Services Group and a member of the EAG Affordable Housing leadership team. John leads a nationwide affordable housing practice with clients across the country. With nearly 15 years of experience, he specializes in serving the affordable housing industry, advising developers, investors, and real estate principals across the full lifecycle of a project. From deal origination and structuring through construction, lease-up, stabilization, and the full 15 year compliance period, John serves as a trusted advisor on whatever issues arise along the way.

His consulting work spans LIHTC structuring and acquisition due diligence, partnership and joint venture negotiation, debt and equity restructuring, cost certifications, dispositions and exits, and the recurring federal, state, and local tax compliance that ties it all together. He also advises real estate sponsors on individual tax strategy, entity planning, and wealth preservation in connection with their development activities.

John is an active proponent of applying emerging technology to affordable housing tax practice, leveraging AI tools to deliver faster, more precise client deliverables and to free advisory capacity for the complex issues that matter most. He regularly presents client webinars on developments affecting the industry, including the tax law changes introduced by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Prior to joining the firm, John was a Director with Tidwell Group, LLC, where he built his practice in affordable housing, conventional real estate, and not-for-profit taxation.
