Richard Cahlin is a Director in the Tax Services Group with significant expertise in the U.S. taxation of international transactions, both inbound and outbound. He brings a comprehensive approach to tax compliance, consulting and deal structuring. Richard also works with expatriates on their financial management and tax issues, including pre-departure and subsequent return tax planning and tax compliance.

Richard’s expertise includes both domestic and international corporate tax, entity formation, acquisitions, reorganization and due diligence, in addition to partnership transactions, inbound and outbound transactions, and taxation of foreign entities. In addition, Richard works with a variety of U.S. citizens and foreign individuals living both in the U.S. and abroad. He understands the U.S. tax compliance rules and the effects of each individual’s foreign aspects for U.S. reporting requirements.

Richard’s clients span public, private, multistate and multinational entities. His practice has involved serving clients with operations in Western Europe and South America, including the United Kingdom, Russia, Israel, Turkey, Italy, France, Jamaica, Colombia and Venezuela.

Additionally, Richard has specialized expertise in Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) transactions and is well-versed in FIRPTA planning and analysis, working with our IRS Certified Acceptance Agents in Miami to facilitate the ITIN and FEIN application process for foreign investors and their companies. 

Richard understands the issues that are important to business enterprises with multinational activities, such as foreign owned partnerships, corporations, disregarded entities, foreign investors of domestic companies, transfers of U.S. property, treaty based positions, and foreign tax credits.
