The Controller Opportunity

Luna Labs has a 30 year history of government contract performance, technology development and product commercialization. Carved out of Luna Innovations Incorporated (NASDAQ: LUNA) in March 2022, Luna Labs USA, LLC leverages third party contract research to de-risk early technology development and prototyping. The Controller will have the unique opportunity to step into a high performing, fast-paced organization with the opportunity to help drive strategic processes and direction of a company in a “start-up” environment.

Key Challenges

  • Complete the implementation of Deltek Costpoint – assess current state of Phase I implementation, develop and implement roadmap to completion of Phase I and Phase II.
  • Improve financial forecasting, reporting and program visibility, while assuming ownership of the forecasting and budgeting process.
  • Improve contract accounting processes and reporting (revenues, expenses, unbilled receivables, deferred revenue, sub-contractor accruals, percentage completion analyses).
  • Improve internal management, investor and Board reporting packages and processes.
  • Implement/improve finance and accounting processes, policies and procedures – accelerate, refine and document the close process and train staff.

Routine Responsibilities

  • Manage all finance and accounting functions, including: accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable, general ledger, tax, treasury and cash management, government compliance, budgeting and forecasting.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly and annual close, financial reporting and audit processes.
  • Maintain accurate and organized accounting records and analyses that are easily understandable and readily auditable.
  •  Establish and maintain processes, including financial and tax strategies, that improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Lead the initiation, review, and approval of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Responsible for ERP implementation and maintenance.
  • Responsible for all DCAA/indirect rate related matters, including: analyzing and optimizing the company’s indirect rate strategy, forward pricing submissions, incurred cost submissions and audits.
  • Research technical matters to develop accurate accounting and disclosures.
  • Maintain relationships with external auditors and banks.
  • Improve and maintain a 13 Week Cash Flow Forecast.
  • Partner with management on the improvement and development of reporting packages to facilitate and enhance operations.
  • Maintain accuracy of monthly revenue recognition and related contract and product accounting.
  • Ad hoc tasks as requested by the executive management team, private equity investors and Board of Directors.

Education / Certifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher-level degree from four-year college or university in accounting, business, or a relating degree. Certified Public Accountant license required. US citizenship is required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • 10+ years’ experience in public accounting and/or industry with government contracting focus.
  • Preferred: Minimum 2-5 years public accounting with 5-10 years private industry experience.
  • Experience with Deltek ERP systems implementation and operation required (Costpoint)
  • Intimate knowledge of government contract accounting, including for fixed price and cost-plus fixed fee contracts.
  • Excellent understanding of Accounting Principles (GAAP) and government contracting regulations (FAR/DCAA/DFARS).
  • Contract research and product sales experience is preferred.
  • Experience with private equity backed companies preferred.
