In a world reacting to COVID-19, the real estate market is adapting to population shifts and new investment priorities

Published for the third year in partnership with Preqin, the Markets in Focus: U.S. Real Estate report details fundraising, deals, and performance insights across the U.S. private real estate sector, featuring exclusive commentary from industry experts.

The U.S. economy is well on its way back from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the consequences are still evident in the real estate industry. The aggregate value of private equity real estate deals in the U.S. fell by about half in 2020 compared with 2019. So far in 2021, the hospitality and retail sectors have struggled to find their footing, but residential is well ahead of its peers, with $17bn worth of deals completed.

Although the pandemic will most likely impact real estate investing strategies for the foreseeable future, property remains an important part of investor portfolios. The industry will need to innovate and adapt to thrive given the social and economic changes wrought by COVID-19.

Key topics in the publication include:

  • Population shifts
  • Consumer habits
  • Focus on ESG
  • Lingering pandemic effects
  • High demand for industrial assets
  • Future of retail
  • Hotels outlook
  • Niche property strategy
