STAR Exemptions—Critical Information
The New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) provides homeowners with partial exemptions from school property taxes. If you earn less than $500,000 and own and live in your home, you are probably eligible for the STAR exemption.
As a result of New York State legislation, New York State residents must register by December 31, 2013 in order to continue to receive STAR exemptions. Letters were mailed to Nassau County residents on September 20 & 21 and are scheduled to be mailed to Suffolk County residents between September 30 and October 4. Registration can be done online or over the phone and is a relatively simple procedure. This will not impact the STAR exemption for 2013. The registration is one time and will apply to 2014 and all subsequent years. The Registration period is open through December 31, 2013.
Detailed information about the STAR program can be found here.
The purpose of the new procedure is to give NYS the ability to cross check data to insure that homeowners are only claiming one exemption. According to Executive Deputy Commissioner Nonie Manion in comments she made speaking before a practitioner group, New York State will be cross-checking data with other states as well to confirm that homeowners are only claiming one residence as their principal residence.
