LGBT Individual and Alternative Family Services
On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision stated there is a constitutional right to same sex marriage in this country. This means that the 14 states that still do not recognize same-sex marriages will have to recognize them by the mandate.
The Supreme Court clearly stated that it is a constitutional right for same-sex couples to marry. They used the term "equal dignity" in the eyes of the law as the term they believe this ruling will have on all married couples.
While this is important news, this fight is not completely over. There is the concern that "religious objection" may be the next way opponents try to delay this ruling. A state that strongly supports the ban may state that a district is limited to the ceremonies it performs or will say ceremonies do not need to be performed by court justices who have a religious objection to it.
But for today let’s recognize the impact of the milestone. Across our country, same-sex married couples are entitled and subject to the many benefits and burdens that opposite-sex married couples enjoy. With this in mind, same-sex couples should review their financial and tax planning with competent professionals who are sensitive to the issues facing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Non-Traditional Family (LGBT) community and fully up-to-date on the details as they develop.
EisnerAmper has a team of dedicated professionals focused both personally and professionally on these issues. We are committed to serving the needs of the LGBT community in addressing their financial and tax needs in a rapidly changing environment.
