Immigration Equality and the Immigration Equality Action Fund seek a dynamic, passionate leader to join our senior management team. We are proud to be the national leaders in the field we pioneered: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and HIV immigration rights. We helped end the HIV travel ban, led the successful fight to secure green cards for LGBTQ families, and have directly represented more than 1,000 LGBTQ asylum seekers.
Founded in 1994, Immigration Equality has a dual focus of direct representation and impact work. We take calls every day from clients who need help right now and we work to change the systems that have lasting impact on how LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants are treated. We work with LGBTQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers, detained individuals, and binational couples, answering more than 3,500 hotline calls and representing more than 600 individual litigants each year. We also engage in impact litigation to protect the interests of our community. Finally, through our Action Fund, we lobby local, state, and federal policymakers to pass progressive legislation consistent with our mission goals.

Immigration Equality is seeking an experienced, dynamic, creative, highly skilled individual to become our new Communications Director. The Communications Director is a full-time permanent position and will be based in our New York City office. The position will work closely with our legal, development, and program staff, and will report to the Executive Director.
The Communications Director will be responsible for driving a comprehensive online, print, and video public education and media strategy. Our staff and clients have been regularly featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, The Los Angeles Times and more. Immigrant and LGBTQ rights are under unprecedented attack, and Immigration Equality is in a unique position to fight for the rights of LGBTQ immigrants. The Communications Director will play a critical role in preparing Immigration Equality’s inspiring clients to be organizational and movement spokespeople.
• Develop and drive a creative communications strategy that showcases the organization’s unique place at the intersection of both the LGBTQ and immigration landscapes
• Act as one of the organization’s primary spokespeople, and train and prepare staff, board, and client spokespeople for media
• Establish messaging and storytelling across the organization and its communications channels, including website, social media, email, media relations, and creative content
• Manage a small team of staff, interns, and contract people; and coordinate across organizational departments
• Work closely with the development team to ensure our fundraising pitches are compelling and successful
• Serve on organization’s senior management team
• Create and manage an organization-wide communications calendar – keeping us all on message
• Maintain and expand our client story bank
• Proactively pitch stories and respond to requests from print, broadcast, and digital media
• Write and edit press releases, advisories, op-eds, e-mail campaigns, client stories, website copy, and speeches
• Maintain organizational branding while guiding the creation of new collateral material – making sure our look, feel, and tone are consistent and inspiring
• Oversee our websites and monitor our web and social media traffic
• A seasoned professional, with at least 8-10 years of relevant experience
• Incredibly strong writing, editing, and oral communication skills – able to write in more than one voice and for more than one medium
• Existing relationships with key reporters and outlets preferred
• Proven experience managing and inspiring a team of people toward shared goals
• Experience preparing people to tell their story to print, broadcast, and digital outlets
• Experience using digital media to promote an organization, including work producing and distributing video and graphics
• Experience working in an immigration, LGBTQ, and/or racial and economic justice focused non-profit
• Proficiency in Spanish or Russian preferred

Salary and Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience with a range of $85,000-90,000. Excellent benefits, including full health insurance coverage, dental and vision, 401(k) plan, long-term disability insurance, and four weeks of vacation annually.
