At C16 Biosciences, we believe that palm oil doesn’t have to be a problem. Our team is building a sustainable and environmentally-friendly alternative to “conflict palm oil,” which relies on tropical rainforest deforestation and emits over 1 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. C16 Bio’s technology platform harnesses naturally-occurring biological processes, improved by the latest innovations in strain engineering, fermentation, and low-cost lipid extraction to produce a better kind of palm oil.

As a Controller, you will own and lead day-to-day accounting in a fast-paced, mission driven organization. You will be the first official finance hire on the team and will have the opportunity to implement new processes and define accounting operations at C16. This role is integral to the success of our ambitious goal of solving the Palm Oil Problem.

This role will be based in New York, NY. We offer relocation support. 

What you'll do:

  • Manage day-to-day accounting functions, including but not limited to, accounts receivable/billing, accounts payable, revenue recognition, cash management, fixed assets, payroll, tax, account reconciliations and monthly close
  • Oversee and coordinate with external bookkeeping provider 
  • Implement and manage our accounting and finance operations and develop plans for driving efficiency and effective internal controls
  • Develop, implement and own the internal systems and financial controls ensuring compliance with all tax and corporate requirements and filings
  • Provide financial analyses as needed Respond to general questions and financial inquiries from team and vendors

  • Strong knowledge and application of GAAP, including financial statement preparation
  • Expert knowledge of fundamental accounting 
  • Ability to excel in a fast paced environment, multitask, and meet deadlines 
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong focus on fostering collaborative interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to implement and drive process and efficiency in an early stage organization
  • Experience implementing systems and tools that support the accounting function
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
