New Jersey Says “Thank You for Your Service”

New for 2017: If you are a military veteran who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States by the last day of the tax year, you are entitled to a $3,000 exemption on your NJ individual income tax return.  If your spouse (or civil union partner) is also a veteran, he/she is entitled to an additional $3,000 exemption as long as a joint NJ return is filed. This exemption is available each year to filers of both NJ resident and NJ non-resident tax returns.

In order to claim the exemption, a copy of Form DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, must be submitted to the State of New Jersey for the first year the exemption is claimed. You can mail in a copy along with the Veteran Exemption Submission form prior to filing your tax return in order to expedite the approval process OR you can file a copy of the DD-214 along with the filing of your New Jersey tax return.

All necessary forms and additional mailing information are provided at the State of NJ Treasury page.
