ICD-10 Postponed – What’s next?

ICD-10 has been postponed until October 1, 2014 from the original ICD-10 implementation date of October 1, 2013.   Even with the delay, the expectation is that all physician practices should currently be performing risk reviews in all areas of the practice affected by ICD-10.

There are currently 13,000 diagnosis codes which are being increased to 68,000 codes with ICD-10 implementation.   Based on the level of specificity required, physician documentation needs to improve.  Coding and documentation reviews for ICD-9 should be done which will enable the practice to establish guidelines for documentation improvement with ICD-10.   Education and training in this area should be ongoing throughout the ICD-10 implementation process.
