California Wildfire Relief 2020
August 26, 2020
By: Paul Bleeg
On August 24 the IRS announced that taxpayers within designated disaster areas declared due to the California wildfires will be given an extended due date to file their individual and business tax returns. The extended due date is December 15, 2020. This relief does not extend the time to pay any tax due, which was July 15, 2020, so any amounts due should still be paid as soon as possible.
The December 15 deadline is also given to the quarterly estimated tax payments for 2020 that are due on September 15, 2020.
At this time California has not announced any relief; but stay tuned, as California has provided similar relief in prior wildfires.
Taxpayers residing in the following counties are eligible for the extended deadlines: Lake, Monterey, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo. Additional counties may be added to the relief areas as the fires develop.
